Sproutcore: fashionistas in Beijing are wearing sprouts on their head

Move over flower crowns, there’s a new plant based hair trend in town.

People in Beijing have found new usage for bean sprouts, a healthy vegetable packed with plenty of vitamins and proteins. Dubbed #Sproutcore, people have started wearing bean sprouts in their hair. The trend is reportedly popular amongst people of all ages, ranging from young children, men, and, according to bloggers, grandmothers too.

Some believe the trend was inspired by a character from the popular cartoon ‘Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf’ who, when he thinks too hard, grows leaves from his head. One blogger wrote: “While we’d like to consider the trend some sort of submersive comment on the chronic air pollution  that shrouds China’s capital, it’s really just a thing because it’s cute.”

While most people are content with wearing plastic versions of the vegetable atop their mop, some advocate for going a little further. Zachary Harris of ‘First We Feast‘ said: “You can buy your own #Sproutcore accessories on eBay for less than a dollar, a wool version from Etsy for $9, or you could make your own snack-ready version from a real bean sprout. We suggest the latter.”

We disagree, but the trend is cute nonetheless.
